So Jen’s Challenge was “Aspen Trees, with or without foliage”.
Gah, trees! They are so dang difficult….
Here’s my reference photo
I’m using a Pentalic Watercolor Journal. First, I taped off the trees to save the whites.
Laid in some sky and background trees, and attempted shrubbery
Painted the trees…not digging it. I think I used too much color on the trees, should’ve left ’em whiter, maybe. Also, they still look flat.
Added a bit of pen, and now they look OK.
Butterfly – I saw this on Pinterest, and thought it might be fun to do with the kids…
Fold a piece of watercolor paper in half. Add some color on either or both sides, fold it in half. More color, fold again. Do this as many times as you think is necessary. I used watercolor at first, but wasn’t getting enough color, so I used acrylics, as well.
With the paper folded, cut out a butterfly shape. Add some white chalk or black ink to define the shapes a bit. Draw a body, and glue the wings onto the body.
I like the close up tree on the left, I think the blue hue took away from aspen bark look.
******what a cute idea for the kids….they will love the results of the butterfly******
I like how your dropping of paint onto the trees makes a random bark texture. The background trees are great as well. I kinda like the blue in the trees as it makes it a bit more abstract.
Pen was just what was needed. Nice effect.
Cool butterfly.
The butterfly is striking!
Both techniques fun to try and results are lovely … like the butterfly
The pens are what finished them off I believe. Kids would love to do the butterfly or whatever shape they can think of.
